| The Role of AMSNY in New York State's
medical education
Incorporated in 1967, the Deans of AMSNY member
institutions comprise the Board of Trustees. The Board provides
vision and leadership, ensuring the state’s preeminence
in the fields of medical research, medical education and patient
care. In NYS, medical education is a multi-billion dollar industry.
In recent years, the schools have brought in nearly a billion
dollars annually to the State in Federal research grants. NY’s
academic medical centers have an estimated annual economical
impact of $66 billion in jobs, construction, purchases and tax
revenue.
AMSNY…
Collaborates
AMSNY connects the people, knowledge and resources of NYS’s
fourteen public and private medical schools with civic and community
health care, educational services and funding providers. AMSNY
responds to the needs of the NYS medical
schools through its standing committees,
ensuring the state’s preeminence in the
fields of medical education, medical
research and patient care.
Committees work to ensure:
• Improved health care throughout NYS through public education
and outreach programs.
• Equitable medical education and care through academic
and financial support to educationally and economically disadvantaged
students who are underrepresented in medicine.
• Information dissemination and advocacy to policy makers
and philanthropic foundations to enable adequate funding for
medical education.
Educates
AMSNY provides educational opportunities for medical students, residents,
faculty and those students wishing to follow a career in medicine.
It coordinates an intensive statewide effort to increase equitable
representation in medical education and access to healthcare
for the economically disadvantaged. It's programs include the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP), the Post Baccaulaureate Program, and Faculty Development Programs in areas such as professionalism, clinical skills remediation and mentoring minority students.
Advocates
The knowledge and expertise of AMSNY member institutions
have influenced healthcare policy by educating federal, state
and local leaders. AMSNY has advocated for access to healthcare
for all people, AIDS patient care responsibility, animal research,
biomedical research and palliative care education.
