The Challenge of Competencies in Undergraduate Medical Education

Please reserve September 16, 2011 to participate in the 2011 Symposium of the Associated Medical Schools of New York (AMSNY) Medical Education Committee, in conjunction with Albert Einstein College of Medicine GME program entitled
The Challenge of Competencies in Undergraduate Medical Education
The goal of the symposium is to share approaches, solutions to key challenges and best practices with regard to the implementation of competency-based education and assessment. The conference will open with an interactive panel discussion with time for large group exchange and reflection. To begin the day a distinguished panel of speakers will discuss models of outcomes-based education at their home institutions:
- Latha Chandran, MD, MPH, Vice Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education, Stony Brook University School of Medicine will discuss: Integrating competency into an existing medical school’s curriculum
- Stephen Lurie, MD, Director of Evaluation, University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry will discuss: Linking assessment to competency-based goals and objectives
- David Battinelli MD, Senior Associate Dean for Education, Hofstra-North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine will discuss: Designing a competency-based curriculum for a new medical school.
Lunch will be followed by the plenary presentation:
Defining Performance Milestones in Undergraduate Medical Education
Maryellen Gusic, MD, Executive Associate Dean for Educational Affairs,
Dolores and John Read Professor of Medical Education and Pediatrics
Indiana University School of Medicine
Dr. Gusic will share her experience and long-range perspective on competencies from a school that pioneered outcomes - based medical education nearly 20 years ago.
Subsequently, in facilitated peer-mentoring sessions, the speakers will facilitate round-table discussion around the issues raised during the preceding parts of the conference. Participants will be asked to bring questions and challenges for small group conversations designed to share system solutions and best practices. Potential topics include: assessment of competencies (how to define and validate what we want to measure?), using technology and portfolios in developmental assessment, negotiating and managing change, and/or adapting pedagogies to meet the needs and milestones of individual learners. Please come with your own questions, challenges and ideas to share with AMSNY colleagues!
The symposium will held at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in the Goldwurm Auditorium and begin at 10:00 am on the morning of Friday September 16th and end at about 3:00 pm. A detailed agenda and materials will be forwarded in advance of the conference. Please contact Mike Azark at michaelazark@amsny.org, or 212-218-8920 by September 2nd to confirm your attendance and to register. In order to help with the cost of food, there will be a small registration fee of $50 per person. CME credit will be available for this event.
We greatly value the contribution you will make to this effort and look forward to your participation.
